Imagine building a house. First, the foundation must be laid. Without firm and careful groundwork, even the strongest structure will fail in the first strong wind. In the same way, combat training requires a proper foundation. At this level, the essential skills are strengthened and refined. This stage should be repeated five to ten times, accumulating around 50–100 hours of dedicated Shaolin foundation practice. The instructional material offers guidance, but true understanding comes only through repetition and perseverance. During this stage, the number of press-ups, turning punches and knee raises increases, strengthening both body and determination. You will be introduced to the principles of Shaolin stretching, developing flexibility and balance. Through consistent practice, your rooting deepens, becoming steady like the roots of an ancient tree. More advanced flexibility kicks are introduced, and body coordination is trained through progressively demanding techniques. As training develops, greater attention is given to fighting stances and fundamental footwork. Powerful yet controlled movements are explained in detail, and Shaolin combat fist techniques are refined further. You will practise three principal punches and explore their combinations. Shaolin shadow boxing is introduced, along with the correct striking method on the punching bag. Training then progresses to traditional pad work. Combat kicks are presented gradually, allowing for individual practice, partner drills, bag work and group training. Push kicks and round kicks are studied carefully, including their application and defence. Hand and leg techniques are combined into fluid sequences, followed by the introduction of subtle counter-attack methods. At this stage, the cultivation of Qi is introduced. By harmonising breath, intention and movement, the muscles and tendons are strengthened and aligned, preparing the body for the demands of advanced Shaolin combat training.
